Indeed, It's unbelievable how misery, unpolite and ungrateful some people can be. At the same time, if opensource developers give up because of those people's lack of manner, i think it's not a good move. Not everybody 's like those wormholes. In particular, bbclone being an excellent piece of work, it received a lot of continuing praise from the community. I think it would be a bit childish to give up a project because there are idiots. They can just as well don't pay attention to those and focus on the people that DO read manuals and DO search the forum before posting, and DO try to help by answering other posts.

Personally, i'd love to help with bbclone, but i fear that due to my lack of time, i will be more harmful than helpful to the project.

Actually they are looking for a new maintainer and other people to participate, or, in other words, they do want to continue the project. Given the quantity of posts in their forums, there seems to be some interest to improve the counter, but as so often with Open Source and other voluntary projects, by the time no one can earn money or fame with it, no one is willing to take responsibillity and get involved. So if the project should die, then not because two people left but rather because of people's ignorance and/or indolence.

It's always easier to moan about a programme's limitations and to blame the developers for it (without actually proving that one could do better -> convenient position that can't be attacked) than to be responsible oneself for any changes made to the code. Furthermore, no matter what decision you make, there will be always someone complaining and eventually calling you names. Often there's the expectation the "emergency service team" has to be present 24/7 and immediately to reply within hours no matter how silly ithe inquiry is or whether it has already been mentioned somewhere in the documentation

I guess people have some awareness about the implication of being exposed to the public, in particular those who are actively practising the behaviour mentioned above and therefore don't exactly want to be treated the way they treat others. But who knows, maybe someone with plenty of time and patience will eventually pick up the project and go on with it.
